All About Mulberry Hopton Bag by Johnny Coca

Mulberry Hopton Bag:

The new Mulberry Hopton Bag is out this week in stores. The angular bag looks somewhat like a Roberts radio and was conceived as an inside out construction emphasising a ‘3D volume’. The Hopton bag comes in panelled Dune/Oxblood/Black/Porcelain Blue and Black/Orange/Chalk/Crimson, alongside monotone Dune, Clay and Bright Orange.

The new Mulberry Hopton bag will also be available with hand-painted snakeskin accents in a multicoloured version of Fiery Red and Midnight Blue. Johnny Coca’s team has described the Hopton as a celebration of his love of technique, which stands to reason since the designer maintains that all bags should be “graphiquement fort”. In other words, they should be eye-catching and graphically sophisticated, which proves that Johnny Coca is a product designer at heart. He studied at Paris’ Ecole Boulle which is one of the French capital’s best architect and product design colleges.

For Spring/Summer 2017, Jonny Coca has also redesigned the Mulberry Piccadilly by super sizing it. It now looks more like a weekend bag capable of transporting a small canine or two! We all know that the Mulberry designer likes to rethink old classics. He believes that tradition is always at the heart of a brand, only it is a creative director’s job to rekindle it with modernity. One of the first things Coca did when he first arrived at the brand as Creative Director, was to streamline the 2003 Mulberry Bayswater by doing away with its superfluous side straps and simplifying its famous postman’s lock.

As for the new Mulberry Hopton bag, it’s name is steeped in British tradition too: he appropriated it from a street in London’s Southbank, next to the Tate Modern. No wonder it looks so architectural! Johnny Coca however is more likely to be found at London’s new Design Museum in Kensington. The Spanish-born creative has previously cited luminaries such as  Mies van der Rohe, Shiro Kuramata, Marc Newson and Ron Arad as his design heroes.
