Chanel SS16 Paris Fashion Week Show at the Grand Palais

Chanel is once again taking over the Grand Palais for its SS16 catwalk this season. A favourite venue for Karl Lagerfeld, the iconic 19th century building was transformed into a mock casino for his couture AW15 collection in June, and was previously reimagined as a supermarket for Fall 14/15 as well as a brasserie for AW15/16. In fact Lagerfeld hasn’t strayed from the Grand Palais for Chanel since 2006 – his obsession stems back to when he was but a wee (ponytailed?) child: “I first discovered the Grand Palais when I was a child, at a Car Show! However one of my fondest memories dates from the end of the nineteen sixties, when I attended a Maurice Béjart ballet in this amazing venue”, explains Lagerfeld.

All Karl’s shows at the GP involve grand scale role playing of some kind. The extravagance of the architecture has always provided the designer with the perfect backdrop for playing at being a big kid again often with gargantuan props (who can forget the golden lion and pearl toy for his Fall 2010 Couture show?!).

For Autumn/Winter 2008/09, he imagined a giant merry-go-round, festooned with huge CC buttons and ’Land of the Giants’-style jewellery, handbags and shoes that the models sat on as the carousel spun round. For Spring/Summer 2008 Couture, the models emerged from a monumental white tweed-style jacket erected in the Nave.

He’s even had a street protest there, set in his pseudo Parisian Boulevard complete with 19th century houses and with Cara Delevingne leading a pack of Chanel protesters with placards (SS15).

It remains to be seen what fantasy world he has cooked up this season, but something tells us it’s not going to be a subtle affair.
