Dior SS16: Let’s Talk Sleeves and Scalloped Edges

Dior’s SS16 Paris Fashion Week show was held inside a flower-covered cave outside the Cour Carrée of the Louvres. There was one stand-out tulip amongst the makeshift field of blue delphiniums: Rihanna in a baby pink tulip Dior cape. ‘The goddess has arrived!’ exclaimed fans on Instagram.

As for the Dior princess, it seems that next season, she will covet sheer white and scalloped edges, on everything from shorts and tops to knitwear. Model Sofia Mechetner carried the look beautifully in panelled shorts and a scooped-neck crop top buttoned at the side, see below.

The sleeves were Raf Simons’ playful focus again, just as they were for SS15; but this time, they weren’t so structured: sometimes puffed up like gentle gauzy balloons at elbow level, or elongated and straight cut beyond knuckles. On knitwear shoulders were positively Tudor, puffed up and broad to contrast the ribbed cropped style. Interestingly, Fendi also brought back the puff sleeve at its Milan SS16 show last week, only Dior’s take is decidedly more ephemeral and delicate. Perhaps there may be a case for choosing to wear your arms ‘French’ or ‘Italian’ this summer…
