In Your Face Beauty: Tattoos for AW15

The fashion industry is known for drawing inspiration from the streets and from sub-culture trends.  For example, the recent piercing craze, provided inspiration for makeup artist Peter Philips for the SS15 Dries Van Noten show, where models wore painted-on gold lip rings with the same metallic foil effect.  Philips told Vogue that the gold line down each model’s lower lip “could be a piercing… it could even look like the shine from a lip gloss.”

This season, the skin thing of choice is face tattoos (or the washable kind!).  This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this: back in 2009, Chanel sent models down the runway covered in temporary tatts at its Spring 2010 show, and again when artist Scott Campbell — Marc Jacobs’s go-to guy for ink — created temporary tattoos for the Louis Vuitton Spring 2011 menswear show. The A/W15 catwalks took it up a notch this year adorning models faces.

All four cities got in on the act too. Crescent moons at Rodebjer in New York, floral appliques at Simone Rocha in London, a variety of delicate designs at Giamba and a star-shaped eyeliner extensions at Anthony Vaccarello in Paris.

Makeup artist Tom Pecheux referenced The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde backstage at Vaccarello, where models walked the runway in all-black studded, leather, asymmetric dresses fit for the coolest girl at the club. He created a half-star ‘tattoo’ under the eyes by sketching the shape with navy liquid liner and going over it with matte black eye shadow to create a true tatto colour.

Musician FKA twigs gave the trend a go at the Brits this year : “When I went on stage, I felt like I craved war paint so I could stomp through my shows,” said Twigs after a particularly artful face exhibition. “I was really inspired by a picture from a Galliano [Givenchy Spring ’96] show – it was so tribal and strong. I take elements of the linear face strokes and even apply it for when I go out casually, a line down my chin, dots and stripes on my face.”

Will you be reaching for your eyeliner this winter?
