From The Archive: Fashion East Alumni – Where are they now?

Fashion East has been a platform for supporting emerging designers since 2000. Now, 16 years later, we can see that Fashion East was the starting point for many talented designers. The non-profit initiative not only provides funding but exposure, placing growing designers on our radar.

Fashion East with Topshop as their main sponsor, selected the following womenswear designers to present their AW16 collections last LFW: Mimi Wade, AV Robertson, Richard Malone and Caitlin Price. The menswear designers that just showed their SS17 collections with Fashion East included Feng Chen Wang, Per Götesson, and Charles Jeffery Loverboy.

Looking back over the last decade, we have selected a handful of Fashion East Alumni. We view their first LFW collection, and where they are now.

THEN:  AW05 Fashion East marked Gareth Pugh’s LFW debut.

NOW: Gareth Pugh is one of this year’s recipients of British Fashion Council Fashion Trust grants. For AW16 Pugh turns to female leaders and masters power dressing. Suzy Menkes wrote on his AW16 show: “While admiring the quality of precision in his cutting and shaping, making Pugh probably the best tailor in London Fashion Week, I was still puzzled by the idea of re-living the androgynous Eighties.”

THEN: Roksanda Ilincic launched her label 2005, and she showed with Fashion East for AW05 and SS05.

NOW: In 2014, she launched her first shop in Mayfair. Since then she has expanded into accessories, debuting her first jewellery collection SS16 and her first handbag during LFW AW16. The handbag was minimal and tied in nicely with the jewellery.

THEN: Jonathan Saunders, a recent graduate of Central Saint Martins with an MA in Print Textiles, launched his eponymous label 2003 with the debut of his AW03 Fashion East show.

NOW: SS16 was Jonathan Saunders last season. His eponymous label is said to have closed for personal reasons. But in May 2016 it was announced that Jonathan Saunders was the new chief creative officer of Diane Von Furstenberg.

THEN: Richard Nicoll showed AW05 and SS05 with Fashion East.

Richard Nicholl AW05

NOW: Richard Nicoll’s last collection was SS15. He was working as creative director of Jack Wills and decided to put his collection on pause. Nicoll told Vogue UK:  “In the 10 years that I have been doing my label, the fashion seasonal structure has changed a lot with increased seasons and commercial pressures. I feel it is the right time to pause and think of the best and the most relevant way forward for now.”
