All you need to know about 3.1 Phillip Lim’s
‘Romance Reality’ for AW16

Today marks the launch of 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Autumn/Winter 2016 campaign, featuring model Jamie Bochert and shot on the open streets of Brooklyn and New Jersey. Lim’s creative direction of the campaign brings the process down to its most minimal; a photographer (Viviane Sassen, a longterm collaborator with the designer), a model, and the clothes. Despite this, the team covers all corners of the art world: Sassen is also an artist, and Bochert a musician. This wide creative scope shows in the artful images of the campaign, a beautiful celebration of collection’s pieces.

The first look features loose-fitting cropped trousers in a tweed checked fabric, fastened with a leather cord, a zip-up track top in the same material, and an oversized leather jacket with quilting on the sleeves and straps hanging from the lining. The tweed checked pieces are used again in a darker grey colour in the next look, this time with a separate belt on the contrasting trousers and worn with white leather high heels. For a more wintry wardrobe there is a double breasted navy wool overcoat, deconstructed and re-stitched with a fur collar. The most striking look of the four is a rusty red velvet suit with patch pockets on the jacket, and bell bottom trousers. This is worn with a white roll neck and scooped neck top.

The locations of the shoot add to the raw aesthetic, with backgrounds including a shop window lined with cans of olive oil, a grocery store, the exterior of a industrial building, and a white brick wall with a mural of an American flag, the red lines of which compliment the colour of the suit. Americana à la Lim, a place we all want to visit.

These street locations, combined with the decision to exclude stylists and hair and makeup artists allow Lim to achieve his aim to “romance” reality rather than escape it, and create a series of spontaneous, uncompromising images of beauty in the every day, allowing the elegance of the model and garments to speak for themselves.
