It’s grand to dress up isn’t it? You wouldn’t think so these days with the idle #selfie sucking the life out of noble and striking dress, channelling the ‘flash-yer-flesh’ approach to posturing and self-agrandissement. It’s not that today’s digital culture is bad (the good far outweighs the bad obviously), but on some level, social media has turned drama into farce, where everyone is trying to claim their square inch of life’s stage. Where do we get real drama from these days? Can fashion help us on this quest? A certain fashion designer would like to think so. The Loewe AW17 collection by Jonathan Anderson  was all about the theatrics surrounding the art of dressing and how to reclaim the dramatic crescendo of the catwalk.

One look was pure diva: a long gown with a silver pleated top half, open to the navel like the wings of a butterfly. Other dresses were as black as night, occasionally lifted with an ornate stripe or detail, but for the most part positively Macbethian in their opacity.  Anderson maintained the element of surprise with textural juxtapositions: a buttery leather stripe down a tailored tartan jacket, simple gossamer dresses with added puff sleeves or sliced with contrasting material, and fair isle jumpers teamed with polka dots in various guises (perforated on strands, on silky trousers, with sheer flared skirts). Oversize chequered squares, dots and tartan were reoccurring  prints but it was impossible to figure out a single theme which is really how you get an audience’s attention. Keep’em guessing until the end and take your bow. Anderson gives great theatre indeed.
