Model Moment: Sofia Tesmenitskaya

The Saint Petersberg-born model with ocean blue/green eyes most recently appeared on Public School’s catwalk in Dubai on November 5th, hair slicked to the side, bare faced and looking like she was back in her comfort zone – she previously walked for the New York label’s SS16 show at New York Fashion Week.

Tesmenitskaya (@sofiatesmenitskaya) is the wish list girl of the moment having been snapped up by Chanel, Givenchy, Celine, Dior and pretty much every major label during AW15 fashion month, and doubling those efforts in editorial this year – she’s currently the November cover girl for Russian Harpers Bazaar, as well as a firm favourite at W Magazine.

Interestingly, Tesmenitskaya was (unwittingly) part of a statistical experiment conducted by the University of Indiana in 2014. Scientists analysed the data from 400 Instagram accounts belonging to new models in order to predict the breakthrough names that year. Based on their findings (likes, interactions, frequency of posts, followers), they released the names of 15 models most likely to succeed in the business of which Tesmenitskaya was one.

Emilio Ferrara, a computer scientist at the University of Southern California, said, ‘Our analysis suggests that Instagram is as important as being cast by a top agency in terms of its ability to predict success on the runway.’

Perhaps a less cynical take on Tesmenitskaya’s achievements so far would be her chameleonic quality, which has everything to do with her versatility and in-built determination. After all, the gruelling schedule of a ‘supermodel’ is nothing compared to that of an athlete: she was previously a member of the National Team of Russia in Rhyhmic Gymnastics.
