The start of June signals summer, but also the beginning of many international Pride celebrations for the LGBTQ community. To honour this, Nike has launched this year’s Nike Betrue collection. Now in its fifth year, the range includes shoes and apparel and has been launched in association with Nike’s Equality initiative that aims to use sport to inspire people into taking action within their communities.

Nike Betrue was started by a group of passionate Nike employees with the vision to connect with the LGBTQ community in a personalised way, without neglecting Nike’s advances in sports technology. The collection drives to bring innovation to all athletes, providing a unparalleled access to sport. Since its launch in 2012, Nike has been able to provide $2.5 million in support to LGBTQ causes.

This year’s Nike Betrue collection includes four runnings shoes. The first is the NikeLab Air VaporMax Flyknit, comprising of a dark violet upper and a sole that incorporates all eight colours of the  symbolic rainbow flag. For this shoe, the Nike Air Manufacturing Facility in Oregon had to innovate a completely new process of dying the air bags in order to be able produce soles with more than two colours. As for the FlyKnit Racer, many subtleties have been included to celebrate the Nike Betrue manifesto. For one, the slogan “run fierce” has been printed onto the shoes’ sock liners. The iconic Nike Swoosh, also references the rainbow flag, printed in HD to create a smooth gradient of colours from red to violet. The second Racer shoe, is a classic white colour, spotted with pink detailing on the lace eyelets. In recognition of its 35th anniversary the Nike Classic Cortez has been given a Nike Betruemake over, now sporting a rainbow ribbon spanning the length of the shoes tongue.

The message behind the use of the rainbow has been summarised by Robert Gorman who is the LGBT Network Leader at Nike; “The rainbow has and always will be incorporated into the Betrue product in some way”.The apparel in this year range continues in the same gist as the footwear. The tank top is printed with a rainbow coloured unicorn and Nike Betrue printed across the centre. Similarly, the t-shirt has the collection’s llogo however the unicorn has been traded for the rainbow gradient Swoosh. A simple “equality” t-shirt and rainbow socks complete this collection.
