Public School Mr Porter. Creating luxe streetwear is second nature to Dao-Yi Chow & Maxwell Osborne of Public School whose collections are always fresh and full of intriguing spins, without stepping too far into what fashion editors like to call ‘irreverent’. The duo’s Fall 2017 collection was a perfect example of what they do best: take a prescribed ‘uniform’ and dismantle it within an inch of its life, until it takes on a completely new dimension: the winter puffer coat is feminised into a top; the cargo get-up becomes a tailored ultalitarian suit; the classic Prince of Wales blazer is supersized and reconfigured into a kimono-style blouson and matching skirt. The boys therefore take the staples they grew up with – from bog-standard office suits to basketball kits – and break them down to fit this almost constructivist aesthetic.

From a consumer stand point, Public School can do no wrong. This idea that you can wear well-thought fashion which shows such strong design integrity as everyday pieces has also given them high spec selling appeal. Despite having stepped down from DKNY last year due to financial shifts in the company, the design duo exited unscathed and even stronger for the break. They showed their latest collection for men and women together and even championed a strong anti-Trump/pro-unity political message thanks to slogans like ‘Feminist AF’ and ‘Make New York Great Again’. A push towards liberal ideology through simple means.

It’s no wonder, then, that Mr Porter have just launched a capsule collection with the brand – albeit a very considered one: Public School Mr Porter is restricted to 10 easy wear pieces. Yet there’s enough to see it’s classic Public School at work here: a simple black hoodie with a conspicuous gusseted collar; a ‘We Need Leaders’ tee inspired by the anti-Trumpism of the boys’ AW17 collection; a seemingly classic white poplin shirt has raw edged and oversized pockets; a pair of Mono shorts have patch pockets on the outside. Surprise as subtlety is really the key to their success, as proven by the fact that many sizes of the Public School Mr Porter collection  have already sold out.
