Missoni

For it’s Spring 2017 collection, 1953 founded Missoni set out from Varese, where the brand is based, on an adventurous journey through Guatemala and Central America. Inspired by the ‘traje’, an item traditionally worn by the Mayans, and other historic Guatemalan folk dress, Missoni showed cowboy shirts finished in especially woven jacquards, while loom-knit blouson jackets were embroidered to Haute Couture standards. Even Japan was present at the Milan fashion show, in the form of denim shorts belted on the day with regal sash’s. Sandals referenced traditional Central American footwear; cropped cowboy boots were collaged of suede and polished leather. Such meticulous focus on materials and artisanal know-how carried through the entire collection; Missoni twisted soft cottons with iridescent fibres, created prints ranging from Ikats to geometric drawings and even treated fabrics to looks like historic heirlooms produced decades ago.
