Things to Know and Love for 2016: Mura Masa

Every day from Boxing Day, we will be shouting about all the things we are most excited about for 2016, from music and fashion to art exhibitions, as well as taking a couple of opportunities to look back on the things we loved about 2015.

Electronic music is having something of a revolution at the moment, shifting from the hard bass lines of EDM to the more subtle and soft rhythms of synths and real instruments, and no one is making more out of this musical evolution than Alex Crossan, better known by his stage name Mura Masa.

Starting off like many other musicians, he uploaded a mixtape to Soundcloud in 2014 and after this went almost viral on the music sharing site, German label Jakarta Records decided to distribute it. More recently, he released an EP called ‘Someday Somewhere’, which was applauded by Diplo on his BBC Radio show in early 2015, and in the latter half of the year, Mura Masa collaborated with Shura on their song ‘Love for That’ (listen above).

This year looks like it could be promising for Mura Masa after he just won fifth place in the BBC Sound of 2016 poll today. He’ll also be performing at the BBC Radio 1 Future Festival alongside past collaborator NAO in January. So far he has only played small venues in Brighton and London but make sure you go check him out at his shows across Europe in April.
