Zadig et Voltaire celebrates 20 years in NYC with Bella Hadid

Zadig et Voltaire has turned 20 in style by presenting in NYC for the first time and inviting big names along for the ride: Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, Anwar Hadid, Presley Gerber, Sasha Pivovarova all walked for the Parisian which really has only just started in the UK and the States. Swedish Creative director Cecilia Bönström took her lead from the casual elegance of Carolyn Bissette Kennedy, although the Gallic nonchalance was not lost in this collection which oozed effortless style with juste un peu de rock arrogance. There were however conscious steps to be less formulaically Parisian thanks to colour pops of the brightest bubble gum pink (red and yellow too), shouty slogans –  many in  bold ‘all-American’ baseball-inspired type –  and slouchy baggy trousers for a distinctive Manhattan feel. There were chunky knits (a U-turn for Zadig & V which normally specialised in thin knits) and a lot of oversizing going on with elongated sleeves on jumpers and hoodies (hello Vetements?); as well as a wonderful bear-size peacoat worn by Hailey Baldwin. Bella Hadid wore what could be described as the perfect Franco-American partnership: leather kick flare motorcycle skinnies with a chunky knit layered avec blue poloneck. The loose fitting trousers and the pretty layered slip dresses (a brand speciality) will no doubt work best commercially.

In an interview for France’s Madame Figaro magazine published eight years ago, Bönström described the quintessential Zadig & Voltaire woman as “style and relaxed woman who likes to superimpose T-shirts and cashmere; a mother of an active family, always impeccable; Parisienne as imagined in Sweden.” This description seems far removed from this new anniversary collection which was much younger in spirit and more strategically imagined for an international market: sportier, less monochrome and easy to layer. There’s still a lot for the “active mother” but she’s being challenged a little more, which is no bad thing.
